Traditional Guest Room

Warren Wilson built The Venice Beach House in 1911 as the beach retreat for his eight children, their families, guests and friends. As the owner and editor of “The Los Angeles Daily Journal”, Wilson penned editorials, which consistently demanded the vote for women, decried racial prejudices and influenced improvement in the quality of California justice.

While ahead of his time, the newspaper-man occasionally slipped. During the building of The Venice Beach House, Warren Wilson must have been distracted when he reported “All Passengers Saved” aboard the sinking “Titanic”. Wilson later blamed the embarrassing error on America’s infant telegram system, whose greedy operators had withheld the truth of the ocean tragedy while selling their news to the highest bidder.

To escape the daily pressure of his crusades, Wilson retreated to The Venice Beach House, then located on the beach and alone among the sand dunes far south of the resort’s piers and amusements.
